Our top gas stove maintenance tips

Like any appliance, gas stoves benefit from regular maintenance to ensure they operate efficiently and to avoid any costly repairs. In particular, cleaning your stove properly will prevent grease fires, Carbon Monoxide emissions, and will guarantee it works well every time you use it. Our top tips will help you keep your gas stove in the best condition so that it not only looks great, it performs the way it did when it was first installed.

DO

  • Wipe your stovetop after each use.

  • Wait until the burners and surrounding areas have completely cooled before cleaning them.

  • Take the burners apart to soak and then clean them thoroughly in warm, soapy water.

  • Soak and then scrub the grates in warm, soapy water. For stubborn spills and stains you can use grate cleaner.

  • Stubborn cooked-on spills can be cleaned with a mild abrasive paste made from baking soda and water

  • Rinse all parts in clean water

  • Dry all parts thoroughly before replacing them - placing them in a warm (but not hot!) oven for around 15 minutes is a good trick.

  • Dislodge any cooked food caked under or on burners and on the surface of the cooktop.

  • Clean clogged burner holes with stiff wire, pipe cleaner or a pin.

  • Replace the burners correctly. There is a small hole in each of the burner base pieces where the flame shoots out and connects with the burner - if the hole isn’t matched with the corresponding opening in the burner the flame won’t ignite.

DON'T DO

  • Pour water over the cooktop itself as excess water can prevent ignition when you come to use it again.

  • Replace the burners correctly. There is a small hole in each of the burner base pieces where the flame shoots out and connects with the burner - if the hole isn’t matched with the corresponding opening in the burner the flame won’t ignite.

Rangehoods

Don’t forget to also maintain your rangehood. They work hard and absorb grease, moisture and cooking odours when you use your cooktop. As such, they need to be cleaned regularly to ensure they continue to ventilate effectively. Clean the metal with a non-abrasive cleaner or an ammonia and water solution. Some filters can’t be cleaned and therefore need to be regularly replaced. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for guidance.
